After school care comes after a busy school day where children have been in a group most or all of the time and have been working hard. For some children, especially younger ones, this may be stressful or tiring. Their day has been structured and is likely to have been demanding physically, intellectually and emotionally. Our program therefore ensures students have an opportunity to just relax and play (via book corner, quiet play etc).
Indoor and Outdoor play
We have developed a program that is flexible but orderly to provide predictability (which engenders feelings of security) but without regimentation. We are aiming to strive for a balance that allows for and supports responsiveness to children and to circumstances.
Accordingly, sessions are allocated into big chunks of time to allow for concentration and serious engagement, and avoid frustration at not having long enough at an activity or ‘missing out’ (which can impede smooth transition).
The program will be divided into indoor and outdoor times. Dividing the time like this will be done flexibly. For example, in the winter months the outdoor time will be offered when the children arrive so that the children aren’t outside as it gets colder and darker, and in the warmer months the outdoors time will be for a longer period of time.
Children feel secure and safe when they are clear on what is expected of them and can rely on the predictability and security of routines.
Routine activities are those that occur every day: arrivals and departures, eating, transitions between parts of the day, setting up and cleaning up.
Indoor/Outdoor routines
The program offers ‘regular’ indoor and outdoor activities.
Regular indoor activities include:
- Book area/quiet space
- LEGO
- Puzzles
- Billiards/Air hockey
- Art/craft
- Board games
- Movies
Regular outdoor activities include:
- Independent play
- Ball games
- Chasey/tag
- Jump rope
- Hoola hoops, mini bowling
Some flexibility and excitement is also needed to vary the program offered and maximize children’s enjoyment and learning experiences. Accordingly, ‘special’ indoor and outdoor activities will also be incorporated into the program, eg: dress ups, book club and associated craft, cooking, making Eid/get well/thank you cards. There will a special focus on art and craft during Ramadan and Haj (making paper lanterns, Ramadan calanders etc), Eid, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day (cards, decorations, reflections, colouring-in etc).
Homework Program
We believe that allocating a specific time for students to tackle their homework can relieve some of the pressure off parents and students. Our indoor time includes a homework program. Students will not be pressured to complete their homework and this is not a mandatory part of the program. The program will be offered to students whose parents provide their consent. We expect students who are part of the homework program to value the allocated time and take advantage of the opportunity. They can tackle as much of their homework as they wish. We appreciate that some parents would prefer to complete homework with their children, which is why this is an optional part of the program.
